Emergent Form is an architecture and design studio working across New York & Connecticut — where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.
We pay close attention to environmental conditions — investigating form as an intelligent response to forces already present in a site.
Through conversation, research, drawing, and digital modeling, we create a clear visual map to share with clients as each project evolves. Design becomes a collaborative process, specific to its place and people.
Our work moves between architecture, interiors, gardens, and custom pieces, with the same attention at every scale. We care about energy and materials, light, movement, function, views, connecting with nature, how space gathers people, and the daily rituals a home supports.
The goal isn't a signature look. It's design that's deeply considered.
New construction homes, additions, renovations, and restorations — from initial feasibility sketches through design development, architectural drawings, permits, and approvals. We shape spaces around the realities of the site and the way you live.
Full interior design, fixture and finish selections, custom millwork, lighting design, and furniture. We design custom kitchens, baths, and one-of-a-kind pieces — environments resolved down to the last detail.
Terraces, paths, garden walls, exterior lighting, outdoor rooms, and the thresholds between house and land, integrating the earth with the architecture.
Hands-on project and construction management, coordinating consultants, bids, contractors, budgets, schedules, approvals, and the multitude of decisions that turn ideas into built reality, staying true to the vision.
Selected built work · each project opens its own gallery
Jessica is the founder and principal of Emergent Form, a Registered Architect whose work moves comfortably between buildings, interiors, landscapes, furniture, and objects.
She opened the studio in 2015 around the belief that the best design is discovered, not imposed — shaped by the particularities of a place and its spirit, the people who inhabit it, and the conditions already present.
Originally from Chicago, Jessica earned her Bachelor of Science in Architecture at the University of Illinois, including a year at L'École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Versailles, and her Master of Architecture at Parsons School of Design, where she was awarded the Eileen Gray Thesis Prize. Before founding Emergent Form, she worked with Foster + Partners in London and New York on civic, institutional, and large-scale architectural projects, including the Yale School of Management. She later taught architecture at Parsons and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
Her residential practice brings that breadth to the intimate scale of home — moving fluidly between the architecture of a whole building and the small details that shape how it feels to inhabit it. She approaches each project holistically, considering light, space, material, landscape, and the rhythms of daily life.
Hiring Jessica as the architect for my renovation was the best decision! Not only is she gifted and has incredible attention to detail, but she's extremely accommodating. She presented me with multiple options of plans, updated them as the project inevitably evolved, and also provided additional services such as sourcing and securing products. I can't recommend her enough!
Easy to work with, and just the right balance of creativity and practicality.
Jessica was a key member of the design team and site management of the gut renovation of our apartment in the East Village. Besides her great aesthetic sense, design insight and creativity, which were invaluable, she has a comprehensive understanding of construction methods — an essential part of working with contractors, of making sure that the renderings become reality. She's a pleasure to work with: diplomatic, savvy, prompt for meetings, firm with contractors and subs when necessary, and with a knack for finding the best solutions for tricky problems. She's also deft with finding the most cost-effective approach to great design. I couldn't recommend her more highly.
We worked closely with Jessica at Emergent Form to completely redesign and restructure our kitchen and living room, and I can't stress enough what a pleasure it was to work with her. She completely synched in to our taste and how we wanted to use our space, and came up with multiple options for every major decision — all of which we loved. From the biggest restructuring issue to the smallest design tweak, she was always there with advice on what would work best. Logistically she was super-easy to work with: always on time, always available, with regular on-site visits that gave us assurance our contractor was on schedule. Her careful eye always picked up the tiniest issues as the project went on. It's lovely to work with someone whose taste you trust and love — Jessica designed a kitchen and living room for us that are beautiful, functional, and interesting. We couldn't have had a more ideal experience!
I'd highly recommend Jessica. She's incredibly professional, well-prepared and smart. She put great thought and preparation into every phase of our meeting, and she clearly knows so much about what she does. I really like that she offers plentiful ideas and is ready to look for creative solutions rather than just executing in a workman-like way. At the same time she's really receptive and willing to listen. She's highly skilled, and understands how to make the process of renovation as pleasant and exciting as possible.
I hired Jessica to completely flip our condo from a drab developer unit into a highly customized space for our small family. From the first meeting on, I was impressed by how meticulous she is — I chose her out of three other architects I had shortlisted. She's on time, comes prepared to every meeting with materials, drawings, and a project plan, and takes notes diligently, all with a warm, pleasant demeanor. When we hired a challenging GC, Jessica maneuvered systematically and went above and beyond to save us at every point. With a design background, I'm often very involved in the design phase, and she collaborated beautifully at every step — I was always surprised by her ability to listen so keenly and translate that into design. With Jessica you get not only a talented architect but also a great, detail-oriented project manager: she helped with paperwork, interior design, shopping recommendations, and even picking up pieces directly from the warehouse. The project ended in six months, but she still checks in to make sure everything's going well. You're always at ease in her presence, and I miss working with her!
